Character Information

Name: Aya Brea
Canon: Parasite Eve
Canon Point: Pre-Parasite Eve 2
OU/AU/CRAU/OC: OU
Age: 25

World Information: The world Aya comes from is pretty baseline Earth, until the events of Aya’s canon happen. She comes from early 1998, a couple weeks after the New York Blockade Incident, which is the name given to the events of her canon.

Personal History: History at the PE wiki

Personality: Aya is an extremely compassionate person. She became a police officer to help people, first and foremost, and can never turn a blind eye to someone in need. This compassion even extends to her enemies, at times. For example, during her fight with the Ultimate Being, in its baby form, Aya acknowledges that it’s just a child and only wants to live. This, however, doesn’t stop her from doing what needs to be done. Though I’m taking Aya from before Parasite Eve 2, in that game Aya is also remorseful about killing the NMC creatures, as they did not choose their lot in life, and are merely trying to survive just like she is.

Aya is also very determined. She has faced many hardships in her life, from the car accident that killed her mother and sister to the New York Blockade Incident, and while she has doubts and insecurities like anyone else, she has always been able to push through. Giving into despair in the face of overwhelming odds is not something Aya has ever chosen to do, despite the precarious mental state her situation has put her in.

Aya is headstrong. Aya is a skilled detective, having been promoted to the position after only three years working for the NYPD. She is smart and open-minded, letting her think outside the box and not dismiss any theory outright.

Aya is selfless, to a fault. While Aya is a skilled, thoughtful detective, she can also be reckless when it comes to making split-second decisions in the face of danger. Due to her mitochondrial abilities, she generally doesn’t think twice if a situation calls for her to throw herself into danger. This tends to manifest itself into other facets of her life as well, causing Aya to often neglect her own well-being in favor of others’.

Aya can be cold. While Aya loves kids and animals and tends to be very maternal with them, adults are another matter entirely. While Aya has always been more on the quiet side, it wasn’t until after the New York Blockade Incident that she withdrew more and became somewhat broody. She isn’t stupid; she sees how people look at her, the wonder in their eyes. The fear. This intensified after she left the NYPD to comply with the FBI investigation into the New York Blockade Incident. While Aya is perfectly capable of having good working relationships with others, there’s a thick wall between her and everyone else in her personal life.

This is because, even with everything she’s faced in her life, Aya is scared. Deep down, she’s afraid of her powers, of where they come from and what it means for her, existentially speaking. One of the reasons Aya is so willing to throw herself into danger to protect humanity is because without her humanity, she has no idea who (or what) she is. Is she human anymore? Is she capable of having personal relationships with people? Will her mitochondria one day be unable to further rebel against Eve’s influence, or has she truly evolved past that? Will Eve return? In Parasite Eve 2, it’s shown that Aya deals with this issue by becoming somewhat sarcastic and acerbic, and isolating herself from society, throwing herself into her work for MIST. It’s also pointed out that she has trouble sleeping, and avoids using her abilities in front of other people whenever possible.

Key themes: I would say that the main theme running through Aya’s arc is connection. What are her connections to her family? To her coworkers? To her humanity? Is she truly human anymore, or something more? Is Eve’s influence gone forever, or is she merely biding her time before making another play for mitochondrial supremacy? Aya has trouble expressing her need for these connections, especially since her job and connection with Eve has isolated her from the people in her life and placed her in the position of ‘protector of humanity’ - a major sticking point, since she and many others aren’t convinced she’s entirely human anymore. The vicious cycle continues.

Main Motivation: The one thing that is most important to Aya is her spiritual connection to her dead twin sister, Maya. It is this relationship that has pulled her back from the brink on many occasions throughout her life, even before the Blockade Incident. She lives for Maya, because Maya cannot, and protects the world that Maya was robbed of. It’s not a thread that runs through her mind constantly as she goes about her daily life, but more an underpinning that defines her underlying philosophy.

Skills: A list of all the abilities Aya has access to throughout Parasite Eve 1 and 2

Aya has a good amount of powers, though most of them (the Parasite Eve 2 abilities) I’ll be leaving at the wayside (unless there’s a way to acquire them in-game, perhaps as threats grow in power. If not, no biggie ofc!). The majority of her Parasite Eve 1 abilities are self-heals or buffs, which I’ll outline here. However, due to how her abilities work, she cannot heal or buff anyone else but herself. This makes her something of a one-woman army, but not really able to provide any support other than cover fire in a team setting. As far as powers go;

Healing: Aya can use her Parasite Energy to heal herself. She can recover from minor cuts to near-fatal injuries this way, though the more serious an injury is, the more energy it takes out of her. She can also recover from status ailments or any kind of sickness. If Aya is knocked unconscious or otherwise incapacitated, her mitochondria will keep working in this capacity. This passive healing factor also makes Aya effectively immortal, biologically speaking (though not enough time has passed for her to notice this). While she can definitely be killed, it isn’t apparent that she’d ever age the way regular people do, left to her own devices. This also means she can’t get drunk :( Any minor damage sustained will be healed in a day or so. More serious injuries (broken bones, cuts that require stitches, etc.) will take several days. Almost-lethal damage will take a little more than a week.
Barrier: Aya can project energy outward, effectively creating a barrier between herself and incoming attacks/projectiles. This requires effective timing on her part for more forceful blows.
Energy Shot: Aya can channel energy into a projectile and launch it for extreme damage. Most effective when used with a gun or other projectile weapon. It can be shot without one, but it is much more volatile and dangerous for Aya and those around her, depending on how much energy she puts into the shot. May stun Aya for anywhere from 30 seconds to 1 minute depending on how much energy is expended.
Haste: Aya’s parasite energy increases her fast-twitch muscle response, increasing her reflexes and the general speed with which she’s able to act. This is a flat-rate increase, and will not increase or decrease depending on how much energy she expends.
Liberate: In desperate situations, Aya will release control over her mitochondria. This will transform her body into a different form, giving her the ability of flight and a substantial upgrade to her physical strength and parasite power. Unfortunately, Aya loses most control over herself in this form, and will launch herself into a berserking frenzy against nearby enemies. The physical blows dealt while in this form are accompanied by explosions of heat hot enough to combust a human body. This ability will fully incapacitate Aya for several minutes afterwards, and it’ll take a good while for her to be back in functioning human shape.

Apart from her Parasite Energy abilities, Aya is a highly trained U.S. Army/Air Force and NYPD officer. She’s a crack shot with most guns and has a pretty solid base of hand to hand training to back that up, specializing in the tonfa.

Item: A small wooden good luck charm given to her by a former comrade.

Sample:

BANG! BANGBANGBANG!

One shot at the navel, two shots through each shoulder...and one to the neck. The same as last time, and the time before that. Aya sighed in frustration. Why was she having so much trouble with this? The premise was easy enough; four shots, arranged in a diamond. Navel, shoulders, neck. She’d made more difficult shots under more duress than after-hours practice. Why was this so hard for her?

She put her gun on the counter in front of her, rolling her shoulders as she took off the earmuffs. At least the others had already left for the day. There were so many expectations being placed on her, failing such a rudimentary exercise in front of the whole branch wasn’t an appealing thought.

“I’m heading out.” The voice came from behind her. Aya winced. She hadn’t been around for that long, but she recognized Pierce’s ever so slightly condescending tone. “You, uh...you done?”

“Yeah.” Aya didn’t turn around. She could feel his eyes on her, that weird mixture of attraction and revulsion Pierce had in his eyes whenever they met hers. “Just about. I can shut it down.”

“Sure. ‘Night.” Aya had already slipped her ear muffs back on.

In the end, she couldn’t even bring herself to ring up another target. She hadn’t given up, she’d keep trying until she got it, but there was no use in continuing to bang her head against this particular wall, not when she could wake up tomorrow and come at it with fresh eyes. And arms. She hadn’t held a gun for such a long time at once since New York.

And all at once the memories came, unbidden. The visceral sound of flesh tearing, muscles and bones twisting into new and ever more horrific shapes, the oozing puss and goo and plasma dripping onto the floor -

The sound of ripping paper brought her out of it just as much as the paper cut had. She bunched up the target and threw it into the trash, finger in her mouth. She picked up her gun, turned off the lights, and shut the door behind her. She almost jumped out of her skin when she rounded the corner into the locker room and came face to face with Jodie.

“Oh! Aya!” Jodie laughed, putting one hand over her heart. “You startled me!”

“Sorry about that,” the blonde responded, walking around her coworker and into the locker room proper. “Won’t happen again.”

“No, don’t worry about it, it’s - it’s fine, I did it too…” Jodie trailed off, following Aya back inside at something of a distance. Jodie pushed her brunette hair behind her ear, frowning slightly. “Hey Aya, you okay?”

“What? Yeah, I’m fine. What’s up?” Aya was already putting her dirty gym gear into her duffel bag.

“Your finger. You had it in your mouth. Did you get a sliver or something?”

Aya stopped packing her things and looked down. Of course, the paper cut was already healed. Her skin flushed, a normal side effect of her parasite energy having activated. “No, it’s fine.”

“Oh, I see.” There was a moment of silence between them before Aya began packing once more. “Hey, um, are you ready to go? We can leave together if you need. It’s pretty close by, but still.”

“Sorry, what?” Aya’s voice was calm and steady, despite the sinking feeling in her stomach.

“For Eric’s birthday. Drinks at Chez Bernie’s.”

Aya cleared her throat, shaking her head. “Oh right! Yeah, I - there’s just so much to do, with the move and everything. Internet guy’s coming tonight, I leave on assignment tomorrow...”

“Already? Well I guess there’s no surprise there.” Jodie laughed, but the tinge of nervousness was still there. “Broadband?”

Aya smiled, but it came out as a grimace. “Yeah.”

“Cool well if he gets done early, come on by.” Jodie wasted no time booking a hasty retreat.

Aya watched Jodie go, biting her lip. It’s for the best, anyway. Aya had moved to LA to join MIST and finish the fight she’d started against Eve. Humanity wouldn’t be truly safe until all traces of neo-mitochondrial creatures had been eradicated, and she was the best candidate for the job. The only candidate, she thought, looking down at her already healed finger.

Tomorrow, she’d be back at the shooting range. Tomorrow, she’d get a handle on all this. Navel, shoulders, neck. She holstered her gun in the harness she always wore under her leather jacket (yes, even in LA) and went home alone.
